THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 2010: WORCESTER & OXFORD

Today I was up at 6:45 to get cleaned up and ready for the day's activities. My allergy is going strong despite my daily Loratadine pill. Fifty minutes later I went down for breakfast.

I started my walk to the train station at 8:15. Fifteen minutes later I had my day-return ticket to Oxford (OXF), 14.50. I waited on Platform 1 for the 9:09 train to Oxford, which arrived there at 10:35. I put my little orange ticket in the turnstile slot and exited the station. Oxford was very busy with car, bicycle, and foot traffic. As I had planned with Google street view and other maps, I headed south onto Botley Road and east on Hythe Bridge Street to Cornmarket Street, south to Queen Street, and a block west to Westgate Shopping Center and the library.

I navigated my way through the building and up two floors to the part of the library with the county parish transcript books. With allergy in full force, I go through the transcript books for Fringford, Hethe, Godington, and other nearby parishes for Claydon information (one of my 3rd great grandfathers, Henry Claydon, was born in Fringford).

After I transcribed all the references I could find, I left out the back entrance to Westgate and started my walking tour of this historic college city. I got a pedestrian tour map and postcards at the Tourist Information Centre (2.70) on Broad Street near Cornmarket. I started the tour and headed east on Broad Street past the Museum of the History of Science, then over to Turl Street and south to High Street. East past Lincoln College, University Church of St Mary the Virgin, then back on High and up to Radcliffe Camera on Catte Street and east on New College Lane, then over to Magdalen College, back to High Street then south and west on Merton Street, then south on Merton Grove to Oxford's Christ Church Cathedral (6.00 admission).

I was back at the train station at 4:15. At Platform 2, I rested my tired feet and waited for the train, which arrived at 4:47. An hour and thirty-three minutes later I was off at Worcester Shrub Hill (WOS), a few blocks east of WOF. I walked back to the pedestrian street mall area and got a quick dinner at McDonald's (5.00). The street had quieted down with light foot and vehicle traffic.

I was back at my room by 7:20 where I processed today's photos, and then watched videos. Tomorrow I'd relocate to Warwick.
