SATURDAY, JUNE 14, 2010: NEWCASTLE & NORTHALLERTON

I was up at 6:30 to get ready for the day's activities. I got a quick snack, then I went out to the nearby MacDonald's for coffee and a donut (1.81). Using the free Wi-Fi, I did email and sent a note to my next lodging in Worcester, Welland House, with my schedule.

8:40 I left and walked the three blocks to the train station. It was cool and cloudy. At the self-service machine, I got an "anytime return," NCL-NAL, for 19.00 on the credit card, which seemed to be good enough. Then on to Platform 3 to board the 0900 East Coast Kings Cross-bound train. Later, out the window of the train I observed Durham Cathedral and the castle, but I wouldn't visit as Durham wasn't on my travel plan, and I didn't have enough time.

9:45 Off at NAL. The train platform was just a small, open air, red brick structure, good enough for this small city. After ten minutes of walking, I was at the North Yorkshire County Records Office. My goal was to find more information about the HALL family of Croft Parish. From microfiche, I made a list of Hall baptism, marriage, and burial references and then I checked maps of the parish, which was located just south of Durham county near Darlington and on the southern side of the river Tees.

At 3:00 I departed the archives. With time on my hands, I walked around town as far as the parish church, then back to the train station. I was expecting a 1530 train, but only high speed passenger and cargo trains sped by. For fun I took videos of the thunderous and fast passage of the trains, but I would later discover that the files were accidentally overwritten. Finally one bound for Newcastle stopped at 17:25, but this was not an East Coast train, which the conductor quickly took note of in the fine print on the ticket, so I had to pay an additional 11.90 cash. Not much customer service here.

6:12 Back at NCL, I went to MacDonald's for a quick meal, 3.89, and for the Wi-Fi. Later, I got a 20 phone top-up from a nearby newsstand. I walked to the Sainsburys Local for more supplies (8.00). Then I returned to my hotel room to rest, to call home (now that the phone finally had airtime), and to process the day's digital photos and videos on the netbook.

Tomorrow I would relocate to Worcester.
